Delivering Safe, Reliable Plug and Abandonment Solutions Across North America

Written by Plants Goodwin | Dec 5, 2025 3:11:10 PM

For over half a century, Plants & Goodwin has set the standard for integrity, safety, and environmental stewardship in Plug and Abandonment (P&A) services, helping clients meet regulatory requirements while protecting their assets, reputations, and communities by managing environmental risks and liabilities.

Founded in 1970 by Paul Plants and George Goodwin, the company’s vision has always centered on fostering honest partnerships and exceeding expectations with a family-driven approach that prioritizes people and performance. Today, spanning three generations, Plants & Goodwin continues to evolve, consistently delivering on its mission, so clients can rest easy, knowing their well sites are in expert hands, no matter where they operate across the Marcellus, Utica, and North America.

A Proven Partner Across Diverse Projects and Clients

Plants & Goodwin’s portfolio reflects the ability to serve a wide range of clients, including public agencies, environmental firms, energy companies, and private landowners, to manage well decommissioning with precision and care.

One long-time partner, a global environmental engineering firm, recently contacted us for a high-profile P&A project in Warren, OH. The challenge: a 4,600-foot gas well located directly within the construction limits of a significant new warehouse development. Due to our history with this client and our proven ability to deliver under pressure, they reached out to us once again. The scope of work included:

  • Plugging the 4,600-foot gas well within a 10-day window
  • Cleaning and removing above-ground storage tanks
  • Excavating and decommissioning underground pipelines

This project reflects not just our technical skill, but also the trust we’ve earned as a partner on high-visibility projects, where safety, timing, and compliance are non-negotiable.

Project Variety Across North America

While headquartered in the Northeast, Plants & Goodwin supports projects across a wide geographic range, adapting our solutions to fit every environment and stakeholder need. Our work includes:

  • Cuyahoga Valley National Park, OH: Plugging wells in a protected national park requires the highest level of environmental care and compliance. We completed this work with minimal site impact, aligning with the park’s conservation mission.

  • Northwest Pennsylvania Orphan Well Projects: : Partnering with the state to close hazardous, legacy wells has allowed us to support land restoration and protect public safety in rural areas.
  • Corporate Artesian Well Management: We’ve helped corporate clients resolve complex well challenges on active properties, delivering solutions that minimize disruption to operations.

  • Well-plugging in Kentucky: We recently completed our first well-plugging project in Kentucky, marking an exciting expansion of our services into the region.

  • Wireline Services in Virginia: Our wireline department has seen repeated work across the state, supporting projects that require precision, speed, and a trusted field team.

This variety highlights our ability to tailor the work to both rural and urban settings, as well as the technical capacity in ecologically sensitive environments.

Commitment to the Highest Standards of Safety

Safety is a core value that is woven into every facet of our operations. Our rigorous Short Service Employee (SSE) mentorship program ensures that a seasoned mentor guides every new team member, supports them through hands-on learning, and provides them with transparent feedback. We also analyze “near miss” events periodically and democratically establish best practices, fostering a proactive culture that empowers open communication.

That culture paid off with a significant milestone: over 1,000 consecutive days without a recordable injury. This only happened because safety is embedded in every aspect of every project, from planning to execution.

With a flat organizational structure and transparent communication, our crews respond quickly, escalate concerns immediately, and prioritize team-wide ownership of risk reduction. That means safer jobs and peace of mind for our clients.

Building a Sustainable Future Through Responsible Operations

Every well we plug contributes to a cleaner, safer future. P&A plays a vital role in:

  • Reducing methane emissions that contribute to climate change and pose explosion risks.
  • Protecting groundwater from contamination caused by unsealed or deteriorating wellbores.
  • Restoring land to a safe, stable condition ready for redevelopment, conservation, or community use.

That’s why we proudly support state and federal environmental goals, including work under programs managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Whether helping to remediate orphaned wells or prepare construction sites for redevelopment, we approach each job with care for the land, the community, and future generations.
